Rory Pearson

I’ve been making stuff since I was a kid. My end-of-high-school film was panned, but I recently won Best Director at the Sydney Film Festival, so I’m calling that progress. Along the way, I realised something pretty simple: story is the most powerful tool we’ve got. It’s the simple, non-negotiable foundation of everything I make. I’m drawn to bold, striking visuals just like anyone else, but truly impactful work only connects when the story is shaped with intention and backed by a deep understanding of cinematic craft. Knowing how to shape a story and squeeze everything out of it, that’s what I live for.

My work spans a broad spectrum, from elevated visual pieces to comedic or dramatic, character-driven stories and documentary, but whatever the genre, I’m always chasing emotional depth. I’m precise with detail and highly attuned to my audience. Whether I’m building fictional worlds or capturing real-life moments, I’m focused on drawing out performances that feel honest, nuanced, and layered, sometimes serious, sometimes funny, but always earned.

In ad land, I bring a unique edge to my directing toolkit, having spent over a decade in the agency world at IPG and Emotive in the trenches of copywriting and creative direction. This gives me rare, battle-tested insight into how the agency side really works and direct exposure to clients (and those meetings!). It means I don’t just show up to direct, I know how the sausage gets made, I know where to plug in, and I work incredibly well with creatives because I’ve been one for years.

Anyway, loooong story short, my work in narrative, music videos, ads has taken me from Australia to the UK and the US, recieved multiple awards, and racked up millions of views too. Not behd.
